From the Library Journal, January 2005, p. 67:

Recommended by U.S., British, and Australian narcolepsy organizations, this self-published book is one of the few titles available on this disorder. The author, who has suffered from narcolepsy for 40 years, offers straightforward information about symptoms, diagnosis, treatment, and coping with the social, emotional, and legal issues. Although the book's section on medications is somewhat dated, Utley's website (narcolepsybook.com) features updates and links to other organizations and relevant sites. The author hopes to publish a second edition in a year or so.

From The Sleep-e Times, Spring 2003:

“Reading Marguerite’s book is like sitting down in your favorite easy chair and having a chat with a close friend. She doesn’t hold back and, with a touch of humor, lets you into her life, explaining what it’s like to live with narcolepsy.
Marguerite’s anecdotes about the many lifestyle adjustments she was forced to make over the course of 30 years—because of narcolepsy—make up the most powerful portions of the book. …
…The author puts into words things that are often difficult for narcoleptics to explain to others who do not have the condition. …One of the plusses about the book is that it is written in an easy-to-read style with medical terms explained in simple English.
Narcolepsy: A Funny Disorder That’s No Laughing Matter is a must-read by anyone living with a narcoleptic, but can also be a boon for others, such as extended family, friends, co-workers, and employers of narcoleptics, and possibly people with other sleep disorders, including severe apnea.
Marguerite lets you know you’re not alone in your struggles, and she provides simple, clear-cut suggestions you can implement to improve your quality of life.

…Utley employs humor as a coping strategy, giving her, she says, strength to cope with an otherwise serious and disabling illness. Readers with narcolepsy, as well as other chronic disorders, may profit from her unpretentious example.
…Utley includes checklists for the symptoms and consequences of narcolepsy, and guides readers through the diagnostic process. While she uses anecdotes from her own life to particularize each topic, she is careful to point out that others may have different experiences.
        …[a] warm and sympathetic book.

From a Book Review by Allan I. Pack, M. D., Ph.D., Professor of Medicine & Psychiatry, Univ. of PA Medical Center, Philadelphia PA (1995)

Narcolepsy: A Funny Disorder That’s No Laughing Matter is very well written. It is highly informative for the lay public. It contains basic information about sleep and its disorders as well as particular information about the features of narcolepsy and its treatment. I would recommend that all patients with narcolepsy read the book. Moreover, sleep professionals –physicians, nurses, technologists—will benefit from the insights into the disorder that Ms. Utley cogently provides.

  Comments From Readers:

  • I’ve read the entire book once and continue to read excerpts from the book almost daily. I can’t tell you how many times I just sat down as my eyes filled with tears of joy, relief, and many other feelings as the floodgate completely opened…. In short, you have unraveled 40 years of questions that no one has ever been able to answer for me. You have shown me the pieces of the puzzle in my life.
  • Thank you so much for writing your book… I sat and read it from cover to cover—without dropping off.
  • I just finished reading your book. It leaves me speechless and cataplectic… You actually wrote about ME. Thank you! Thank you!
  • Thank you, thank you, thank you! This book has been a God-send. It has helped me so much and has aided my family in understanding, as much as they can, what I am going through….
This book reminds me I am not alone, that there still are things I can do to change my lifestyle , and how to help others to better understand me and my illness. Finally, someone with the illness presenting a realistic and fair picture of what it is like to struggle, live with and accept having narcolepsy.
  • I can honestly say that your book has given me more information, insight and, most importantly, HOPE, than all the others put together.
  • I have searched high and low for a comprehensive book on narcolepsy and finally found one.
  • My wife borrowed your book from the Inter-Library. She read it from cover-to-cover, saying, “You need this book. Go buy it.”
  • Thank you for writing your book, for all the information, and for not making it sound like some dreadful disease, but just something that we have, can manage, and can life with.
